Pumpkin Patch-All
Kindergarten classes go to the Pumpkin Patch and choose
their own pumpkin to conclude a study on pumpkins. Various
activities are planned that integrate the disciplines in
an exciting way.
Barn Dance-Third
grade students participate in an old fashioned Barn Dance
to culminate a unit of study on the early settlers. The
classes read Barn Dance by Bill Martin, Jr. during the study.
Fall Festival-Our
P.T.A. sponsors a fall festival each year during the month
of October. Games are set up in each classroom, and food
and talent are provided. A theme such as Titanic or Out
of This World is developed in each activity available for
the students. NASA provided some of the activities at the
last festival.
Family Breakfast-At
least once during the school year parents are invited into
classrooms for breakfast with their children. This event
is a wonderful opportunity for the parents to visit the
classroom informally and view the students' work.
American Education
Week-Each class has punch with the principal and
sees or hears an inspirational and motivational message.
Teachers and students are invited to dress like a storybook
character. Essays are written to compare education in the
1800's to today's education.
Thanksgiving Feast-Kindergarten
students dress as pilgrims or Indians and participate in
a Thanksgiving Feast to complete a unit of study on the
first Thanksgiving.
S.H.O.P.-Students
Helping Others Planet-wide is a service learning project
conducted by the Gifted Education classes. Each class chooses
an agency to sponsor, researches the agency, and sets up
a booth to share with the community what they have learned
about the agency. Donations for the agency are accepted
at the booth.
Newspaper in Education
Week-The newspaper is used for classroom activities
in conjunction with an artist or poet that speaks to classes
about writing. The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal sponsors
this event.
Chinese New Year
Celebration-Started by the fourth grade teachers
and students as a culminating activity for a study of China,
this celebration has spread to encompass all students. A
parade is scheduled to celebrate the occasion.
Martin Luther King
Justice and Kindness Week-Students in each class
are encouraged to do acts of kindness and record them on
paper bricks. The classes are recognized for the good deeds
they have done.
Read Across America-Activities
are planned to encourage students to read for pleasure.
Industry Education
Day-Teachers meet in partnership with community
leaders and industrial leaders to learn ways to prepare
students for the work force in our area.
Family Reading/Technology
Nights-Parents and students are invited to the
school at night to read together and use technology in the
state-of-the-art computer lab.
Drug Education Week-Two
weeks each year students are involved in activities during
Red Ribbon Week that encourage them to remain drug free.
A parade featuring the mayor, superintendent, local bands
and all Thomas Street students concludes one of the weeks.
National Library
Week-Former librarians are asked to participate
in storytelling for students throughout the week.
Children's Book Week-
Classes are involved in activities such as cooking that
expand the theme of chosen books. The emphasis is on making
reading meaningful and fun for students.
Space Museum-Third
grade classes visit the space museum in Huntsville, Alabama
as a final activity for the study of space.
Teacher Appreciation
Week-P.T.A. honors teachers with a luncheon to
show appreciation for the work they do with children.
Cinco de Mayo-A
school wide celebration is held that allows students to
"show off" their Spanish skills.
Author's Tea-First
grade parents are invited to the Media Center to enjoy refreshments
as they hear stories their students have written.
Field
Day-Thomas
Street's P.E. teacher annually plans team games and activities
for this special day. Each grade level participates, with
younger students beginning the day of festivities, and older
students participating in the afternoon. Relay races, tug-of-war,
and sack races are just a few of the exciting events enjoyed
during field day.
Reading
Fair-Our students
have the opportunity to participate in the state Reading
Fair by preparing a story board about a book they have read.
Winners advance to regional competition.
Rocket Reading-Volunteers
mentor students who need individual assistance with reading.
Giving Tree-Each
day for a week in December, students and faculty bring gifts
for a local agency that assists the less fortunate.
Gum Tree Writing-Students
are given the opportunity to annually enter the Gum Tree
Writing Contest with original poetry, essays, or narratives.
