JUST 4 KIDS! JUST 4 PARENTS!

Thomas Street is always a busy place in the life of our children! Educational activities mixed with good old plain fun makes Thomas Street an environment that enables a child to learn and play at the same time!

Below is a list of our many yearly events.

Open House-This event is scheduled immediately prior to the beginning of school. Parents and students come to meet the teachers, see the classroom, and purchase school supplies.

Pumpkin Patch-All Kindergarten classes go to the Pumpkin Patch and choose their own pumpkin to conclude a study on pumpkins. Various activities are planned that integrate the disciplines in an exciting way.

Barn Dance-Third grade students participate in an old fashioned Barn Dance to culminate a unit of study on the early settlers. The classes read Barn Dance by Bill Martin, Jr. during the study.

Fall Festival-Our P.T.A. sponsors a fall festival each year during the month of October. Games are set up in each classroom, and food and talent are provided. A theme such as Titanic or Out of This World is developed in each activity available for the students. NASA provided some of the activities at the last festival.

Family Breakfast-At least once during the school year parents are invited into classrooms for breakfast with their children. This event is a wonderful opportunity for the parents to visit the classroom informally and view the students' work.

American Education Week-Each class has punch with the principal and sees or hears an inspirational and motivational message. Teachers and students are invited to dress like a storybook character. Essays are written to compare education in the 1800's to today's education.

Thanksgiving Feast-Kindergarten students dress as pilgrims or Indians and participate in a Thanksgiving Feast to complete a unit of study on the first Thanksgiving.

S.H.O.P.-Students Helping Others Planet-wide is a service learning project conducted by the Gifted Education classes. Each class chooses an agency to sponsor, researches the agency, and sets up a booth to share with the community what they have learned about the agency. Donations for the agency are accepted at the booth.

Newspaper in Education Week-The newspaper is used for classroom activities in conjunction with an artist or poet that speaks to classes about writing. The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal sponsors this event.

Chinese New Year Celebration-Started by the fourth grade teachers and students as a culminating activity for a study of China, this celebration has spread to encompass all students. A parade is scheduled to celebrate the occasion.

Martin Luther King Justice and Kindness Week-Students in each class are encouraged to do acts of kindness and record them on paper bricks. The classes are recognized for the good deeds they have done.

Read Across America-Activities are planned to encourage students to read for pleasure.

Industry Education Day-Teachers meet in partnership with community leaders and industrial leaders to learn ways to prepare students for the work force in our area.

Family Reading/Technology Nights-Parents and students are invited to the school at night to read together and use technology in the state-of-the-art computer lab.

Drug Education Week-Two weeks each year students are involved in activities during Red Ribbon Week that encourage them to remain drug free. A parade featuring the mayor, superintendent, local bands and all Thomas Street students concludes one of the weeks.

National Library Week-Former librarians are asked to participate in storytelling for students throughout the week.

Children's Book Week- Classes are involved in activities such as cooking that expand the theme of chosen books. The emphasis is on making reading meaningful and fun for students.

Space Museum-Third grade classes visit the space museum in Huntsville, Alabama as a final activity for the study of space.

Teacher Appreciation Week-P.T.A. honors teachers with a luncheon to show appreciation for the work they do with children.

Cinco de Mayo-A school wide celebration is held that allows students to "show off" their Spanish skills.

Author's Tea-First grade parents are invited to the Media Center to enjoy refreshments as they hear stories their students have written.

Field Day-Thomas Street's P.E. teacher annually plans team games and activities for this special day. Each grade level participates, with younger students beginning the day of festivities, and older students participating in the afternoon. Relay races, tug-of-war, and sack races are just a few of the exciting events enjoyed during field day.

Reading Fair-Our students have the opportunity to participate in the state Reading Fair by preparing a story board about a book they have read. Winners advance to regional competition.

Rocket Reading-Volunteers mentor students who need individual assistance with reading.

Giving Tree-Each day for a week in December, students and faculty bring gifts for a local agency that assists the less fortunate.

Gum Tree Writing-Students are given the opportunity to annually enter the Gum Tree Writing Contest with original poetry, essays, or narratives.
